Vocalist, violinist and songwriter Jessie Kennedy once again joins forces with arch collaborator Justin Grounds, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, on a spacious and haunting record combining re-interpretations of ancient Irish songs with Grounds’ post-modern fragmented fiddle tunes.
Choosing such dark texts such as ‘I am Stretched on Your Grave’ and the intoxicating ‘Lagan Love’, the pair chose to limit their palette to unorthadox instrumentation featuring clarinet, viola, muted piano and electronic textures, and of course Jessie’s voice, stark and pure.
The record opens with a fragment of the first conversation the pair had, with mics recording, as Grounds launches into 'Lord Franklin' with no rehearsal or previous arrangement. The opening track is that first fresh take, sponteneous and natural, and the whole record then unfolded in the same way – recorded within a matter of weeks, all in live takes. Exploring the darker emotional landscape of Irish song, the record weaves a dream-like spell through the cycle of pieces – from the hypnotic arpeggiated baroque viola of 'Lagan Love' to the bleak muted piano lower octaves and vocoder textures of 'I am Stretched on Your Grave', complete with mournful clarinet and the distant sample of a TV evangelist, preaching damnation in the background.
Combining both a love of the tradition with a wild unfettered creativity, this is traditional music for a postmodern generation.
